Choose the record type before searching for a DMV background check

A DMV record request and a criminal background check are different products. There is no single national DMV background-check office. Start by identifying the state motor-vehicle agency that maintains the driving record and confirm whether the recipient needs a driver record, a certified copy, or a separate criminal-history product.

USA.gov provides state motor-vehicle service navigation. It helps locate the responsible agency, but it does not establish every state's fee, eligibility rule, certification option, or delivery method.

California example: own driver record versus another person's record

California DMV's own online driver-record route uses MyDMV and requires a MyDMV account. The online own-record request fee is $2, and the result can be saved or printed. This online result is not the same as a certified mailed copy.

A certified mailed California copy uses the INF 1125 request route. The automated record fee is $5, and the requester can select certification by checkbox without an additional certification charge. Own-record requests require the identifying information listed by DMV, including name, contact/address information and applicable driver license or ID information or date of birth.

INF 70 is a separate authorized other-person request route. It is not a replacement for an individual's own-record request.

Alabama example: driving records are separate from criminal history

Alabama provides a motor-vehicle record route through its driver-license services. The published online MVR fee is $5.75, and driver license offices are another access route. Alabama's criminal-history services are handled separately through ALEA Criminal Records Identification Unit processes and are not the same product as a driving record.

These examples show why the state and product must be confirmed before purchase. A fee, identifier rule, certification option, or delivery method from one state should not be transferred to another state.

Confirm eligibility, delivery and correction route

Before ordering, confirm the recipient's required product, state, certification need, delivery method, identity requirements, payment method, appointment requirements and whether an online result is acceptable. Verify that the chosen service is offered at the specific office you plan to use. Retain confirmation or reference information for follow-up. Contact the recipient before paying for a replacement if the first report was the wrong product.

Corrections belong to the agency that maintains the record. California DL 207 addresses traffic violations and convictions using originating-court evidence such as DL 157 or a signed/certified court letter sent to the DMV Mandatory Actions Unit. Official collision-correction labels contain conflicting references: online materials reference DL 207A while records/form materials reference DL 208. Use the applicable DMV correction route for the specific issue rather than assuming one universal form.
